The Gift of Music

Isaiah 55:10-12

“For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and return not thither but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes forth from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and prosper in the thing for which I sent it.”  “For you shall go out in joy, and be led forth in peace, the mountains and the hills before you shall break forth into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.”

Thought for the Day:  God gives beauty in the music

Sitting in our choir rehearsal last night, I observed something beautiful.  As I listened to several pieces that have been rehearsed over the past few weeks, I heard pure beauty in the words and music. As we were about to do a final sing through of one piece, I grabbed my camera, set it to video, and started recording.  In that time, I realized that my heart and the hearts of everyone in that room was filled with God…so filled with God that the song took on a life of its own and came to ultimate beauty.  When I arrived home, I listened to it once again and was taken in, once again, to the feeling that God was near.

The piece we sang came from Isaiah 55, with these beautiful words: “For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and return not thither but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes forth from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and prosper in the thing for which I sent it.”  “For you shall go out in joy, and be led forth in peace, the mountains and the hills before you shall break forth into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.”  I realized after singing and then listening back to the song that the reason it touched me so much was that I was thinking about walking in our park.  Each line of the song seemed to talk about the beauty I see when I walk and even as we sang, I kept seeing visions of the animals and plants that surround me as I walk.  I thought of the many changes that take place in the park as the seasons change and how everything depends on God to become what it needs to be.  I feel God as I walk, and I felt God as the choir sang so beautifully.

Prayer:  Almighty God, thank you for music and song, and thank you for the beauty in nature you give us each day.  We praise You, God, for all things glorious and for all things given to us each day.  Amen.

Seeing and Hearing the Sights and Sounds of God

Job 12:7-10

“But ask the beasts, and they will teach you; the birds of the air, and they will tell you; or the plants of the earth, and they will teach you; and the fish of the sea will declare you.  Who among all these does not know that the hand of the Lord has done this?  In his hand is the life of every living thing and the breath of all mankind.”

Thought for the Day:  God wants us to see and hear the sights and sounds of the world.

I have enjoyed taking pictures recently as I have walked around our nearby park, a park filled with beautiful land and awesome wildlife.  A couple of people recently have mentioned to me that I must have an eye to see things to take pictures of.  As much as I would love to think that so, I have a different thought about it.  First, many times it is just the camera – that automatic focusing camera that does a great job.  Then, it is timing – timing of the day that gives the best light.  But most importantly, it is God’s sounds and visions.  As I walk I see glimpses of where God is leading my eye – it is as if it is just placed in front of me.  And, as I walk I hear sounds – it is as if I have passed something God wants me to see and He has to make a sound to draw my attention back to the photo opt that I have passed up.  I would love to think it is my eye, but it isn’t, it is what God places in front of me.

I believe God leads us whenever He places something of beauty in our sight, and occasionally it is whenever He places something in front of us to make us think – that homeless person sitting on the corner, or that donation stand for food collection for a food pantry.  Yes, God places the beautiful things in our thoughts to remind us of how much He loves us, but then He places the needs in front of us to let us show His love to those in need.  Where is God leading our eyes and ears today?  Is it to view the beautiful animals and plants we can see if we visit a park, or is it to see with our loving eyes the needs of those around us?  Can you see it? Can you hear it?  God is right there showing us the way through our eyes and through our ears.

Prayer:  God, thank you for loving us in a precious way to bring our sight on those beautiful things around us.  Thank you even more for focusing our eyes and ears to hear the needs of those we meet.  Amen

Animal Mamas and Their Babies

Thought for the Day:  God loves it when His children take in His creation

Watching the animals at our park nearby reminds me that God’s creation is absolutely amazing.  As I watch the squirrels scurrying from tree to tree and finding nuts to hold in their tiny paws to eat, I am completely in awe.  These creatures, no matter how young they are, know instinctively what they need to do to take care of themselves.  How do they know that they need to stash nuts to be available during the cold winter months – how do they know that?  And what about the beaver?  How do the beavers in our park know they are to gnaw and claw trees to make beaver dams.  Looking around our park, we see dams built in different areas and we can see the gnawed markings on the trees. Then, how is it that we do not see the beavers – we know they are there, but we hardly ever see them.  Then, there are the four adult geese that are always with the baby geese.  One can actually see the adults nudging the babies to go certain directions and the adults stand firm beside the babies to make sure nothing happens to them. And my favorite animals to see are the blue herons that nested in the tops of trees and now are beginning to teach their babies.    As I watch, I can see the mamas and their babies, and I can hear the squawking as they tell their mama they are hungry.  I can then see her fly off soaring through the air to find food to bring back to her babies.  There are a lot of God lessons to be learned at the park.

Reflecting on these and so many more animals, I am reminded of how God takes care of His children.  In those times of need, we often get down and can’t get up on our own.  Then God comes in, with either someone to help us through a situation or with some instance that leads us in the way we should go.  Sometimes we do not recognize that it is God who helps us until we look back on a part of our lives and we see it very clear.  God is our Father, and He will nudge us in the right direction.

Prayer:  Father God, we thank You and praise Your Holy name today as we realized how wonderfully You take care of us.  Thank you for the animals in our midst that remind us about how You take care of our every need.  Thank you that we and the animals are wonderfully made.  Amen.

God’s Creations Given to Children in the Park

Genesis 1:31

And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, a sixth day.

Thought for the Day:  God loves it when His children take in His creation

Children, parents, children, grandparents, children in strollers, children fishing, children running and screaming….my walk today at the park showed such beauty in family relationships.  As I walked into the park, I immediately knew my walk would be different.  The school year has ended and parents have begun taking their children with them as they walk at the park.  One child wanted so desperately to pet the baby geese.  With his mother working to stop him and him not understanding was stressful for her.  I helped her explain that the Mama Goose was watchful over her babies and just like his mama was protecting him, the mother goose was protecting her babies.  Then, there was the grandfather with his grandsons, fishing from one pier then moving pier to pier having fun on their fishing excursion.  I could tell from the grandfather’s expression that he was enjoying their excitement of fishing.   The pair of mothers with their children pointing out each turtle and bird along the way – their children oohing and aahing as they saw each animal.    One corner after another, I witnessed children taking in nature in such a pure way.

I wonder what God thinks as He looks down over the beautiful park He created and sees the beautiful children taking in every animal and plant, and enjoying being active as they walk around His park.  As a parent, I look at my children and smile as I see them doing things they enjoy – it truly fills my soul with happiness and love.  I believe God is truly filled with happiness and love as He watches his children enjoying His creation.

Prayer:  God, thank you for the park and for giving the children a place to run and play, and to learn about Your creation.  Help us discover new and beautiful ways to share Your creation with them.  Amen

Gift of Sunshine and Coolness

Gift of Sunshine and Coolness

2 Samuel 23:4

He dawns on them like the morning light, like the sun shining forth upon a cloudless morning, like rain that makes grass to sprout from the earth.

Thought for the Day:  Blessings in the Sunshine

“Rain, Rain, go away, come again another day” we chanted when we were children.  Days of only playing inside brought frustration and impatience with everyone around.  Last evening, after days of rain, even bringing a little leak in our house, the sun began to shine. As we walked with some friends who were visiting, we remarked about the coolness of the night.  Then today, the sun shone beautifully in the sky fulfilling our need for the sunlight, but the temperature remained cool.  What a blessing from God, bringing the beautiful sun and gorgeous cool weather to create the perfect recipe for a playing outside type of day!

When these special blessings come, how do we show our thanks?  God, who brought the well needed rain to nourish our land, also brought the sunlight and coolness to nourish our souls.  Today, I have noticed how our family conversations and activities have gone with less turmoil and frustration, and our family day has felt blessed.  Our family has enjoyed each other and has brought moments of love throughout the day.  Thank you, God, or blessing us with what we need, once again, to see your face clearly.   How do we thank our God?  We praise His Holy Name.

Prayer:  Father God, thank you for loving us enough to bring the needed rain – although we became tired of it – and then bringing the beauty in the sun and the coolness of the air to bless our day.  Help us to be thankful for the blessings you bring our way.  Amen.

God Sends Friends – A special friend – Howard Robinson

Howard Robinson

I just found out that this man with a wonderful smile has lost his fight with cancer.  As I read my Facebook statuses this morning, tears came as I first saw this picture and then heard the news.  Two years ago, I wrote the following devotional so I wanted to share it today.  A good friend to me after I lost my husband in a car accident.

Romans 12:10

A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.

Thought for the Day:  How can we show God’s love to our friends

A special person was a friend to me after my first husband passed away twenty-two years ago. He was a musician colleague to David and played with him on many occasions. David was driving to his house for a jazz practice when the car accident happened. Howard quickly took the reins to make sure everything was done that could be done to help me through a tough time. A few days after the wreck and David’s death, Howard went to the lot where the wreckage was held to get items out of the trunk. Since David was driving to the rehearsal, he had his keyboard and amp in the trunk that had been left there as the car was towed to the lot. The evening of the visitation for my husband, Howard informed me that he had gotten the keyboard out and that it was intact. When I opened it a few days later I found the keyboard in perfect working condition with only a dent in the side to remind me of the accident. I set up the keyboard in the upstairs studio David had built. Throughout the next months, I took solace in that room sequencing songs and recording other songs accompanied by my guitar, even writing several songs as therapy during those hard months.

This friend helped me by doing the most traumatic job of going through the car in which his dear friend had lost his life, and securing something special for that friend’s widow. When I received the keyboard back it gave me many hours and days of hearing David’s songs and gave me the new experiences of writing and sharing songs I had written. I am thankful to God for putting this friend in my life, and although I haven’t seen him much through the years, I still think of him often and pray a thankful word to God. He was a brother in Christ in a time of trouble.

God placed someone in my life, who was from a totally different world than I had ever been a part of, and used him to help me through a hard time.  I pray I can be that type of friend to people who are placed in my life.

Prayer:   God, thank you for friends who take care of me even when I do not know it. Let me be the type of person who can do this for others. Amen.

Time of Laughter

Psalms 37:3-4

Trust in the Lord, and do good; so you will dwell in the land, and enjoy security.  Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.

Thought for the Day:  God brings laughter and fun if we open our hearts.

I stayed home as my husband took our youngest child to his Cub Scout Meeting last evening.  They were sharing time playing games such as football and soccer to work on sportsmanship badges.  When they came home, I realized they did not come into the house so I looked out to see my husband and child throwing the football back and forth.  My husband had been having some knee difficulties, so I was surprised to see him running after the ball like a young kid.  There were many moments of laughter as they played.  At one point, we called my oldest son out because the football had rolled down toward our creek and we thought it best that our youngest not go down into that area.  It was then the laughter truly started.  The three began playing together with the football and frisbee that lay nearby.  At one point, I looked out to see my husband and oldest son throwing the football and my youngest grabbing a limb swinging himself down toward the creek.  More laughter, more fun, more beauty of life.

As my children and husband played together, I saw excitement on their faces and I heard laughter as it soared through the air.  As my husband came in, it was obvious that he had had the time of his life as he played with his boys.  As my boys came in, it was obvious that their time together had been special.  As a mother, my thoughts were thankful that God had brought that wonderful time to watch my family enjoying each other without the need of electronics or gadgets, just a football and three “boys”.  As I awoke this morning, I reflected on that time together and I thanked God.  God was in the midst of the game and God was in the midst of my family.  Laughter came through the game, and love shown through that precious time together.

Prayer:  Father God, thank you for impromptu moments that bring love and excitement to our families.  As we know you are always with us, those moments bring you even nearer to us.  Help us find the laughter and love when our families spend special time together.  Amen.
