Jesus Loves Me, This I Know

Matthew 19:13-15

Then children were brought to him that he might lay his hands on them and pray.  The disciples rebuked the people; but Jesus said, “Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them; for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.”  And he laid his hands on them and went away.

Thought for the DayJust sing, “Jesus loves me, this I know. For the Bible tells me so.”

“Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so.”  Yesterday was a special day as we had an extra rehearsal to prepare our children’s choirs for singing in church today and for the Christmas musical coming up in a few weeks.  The song for today’s service calls for our younger choir to sing the part of the song, “Jesus Loves Me”, and then my choir, the older choir, to sing “Savior Lead Me Day by Day”.  It is a beautiful piece and the children have done a grand job learning the song.  As my choir has rehearsed, I have told them that the hardest part of the entire piece is hearing the younger children sing “Jesus Loves Me” and them to listen without singing.  As we have rehearsed they have struggled and I have seen most of them either sing the words with the little ones or they at least mouthed the words.  They cannot hear the words without singing.  Yesterday, as we rehearsed by ourselves without the younger choir in the room, I had them listen to the accompaniment for “Jesus Loves Me” to practice “not singing” and then to come in as I directed.  I think they finally “had enough” as several of them said almost in unison, “Can we sing ‘Jesus Loves Me’ one time?”  They really wanted to sing those words.  I gave in and had them promise that if they sang the words that one time, they would let the little children sing the words by themselves when we practiced together.   They promised and then they sang.  The joy I heard and saw on their faces was beautiful and touched my heart.  The words, “Jesus loves me this I know, for the Bible tells me so” is so much a part of them that as they heard the precious words being sung, their little spirits just had to sing the words too.  It was very sweet, and powerful, to hear.

“Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so.  Little ones to him belong, they are weak but He is strong.  Yes, Jesus loves me.  Yes, Jesus loves me.  Yes, Jesus loves me. The Bible tells me so.”  As I just typed those words, I could hear the song in my heart.  It is very difficult to hear those words without singing.  The children had it right when they called out, “Can we sing ‘Jesus Loves Me’ one time?”  That came straight from their hearts.  Today my heart is singing.  Today there is a message that the children couldn’t help sing about, “Jesus loves me, this I know.  For the Bible tells me so.”

Prayer:  Father God, thank you for words of songs and for tunes we cannot get out of our minds.  Thank you for people like Anna Warner who have written words that bring You closer to us.  Mostly, thank you for loving us all as children and for always being present with us.  “Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so.”  Amen.
