That men may know wisdom and instruction, understanding words of insight, receive instruction in wise dealing, righteousness, justice, and equity; that prudence may be given to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the youth. The wise man also may hear and increase in learning, and the man of understanding acquire skill, to understand a proverb and a figure, the words of the wise and their riddles.
Thought for the Day: Listen to the wise people God has placed in your life.
My oldest son has a new interest that has him excited and longing to learn more. As he has grown, his interests have involved video games (lots of video games), LEGOs, basketball, and so many others. This one, however, is one that makes him take time in studying, practicing, and trying on us. He is learning card tricks and loving every minute. As I watch him, I can see the excitement in his eyes and as he does a trick for me, I can see how closely he watches me for my reaction to his “magic”. When my husband returned home from a trip, he immediately pulled him aside to do one of his tricks. When I heard his daddy say, “How did you do that?!”, I saw a wonderful smile come across his face. He had “pulled one over” on his daddy and he was proud. What I saw mostly was my son enjoying time with something simple. What I saw was my son interacting with us in a way that he could show us something special and get a reaction. What I saw most, was his willingness to let us help him learn something new – I taught him how to shuffle the cards…..and he listened and learned. He is almost 13, that was the must miraculous thing of all.
As I write the words about my son, I have in the back of my mind that the second portion of my writing each day has to do with the lesson from God that can be learned from my thoughts. Today, I had an “ouch” moment, because as I wrote I realized how hard this particular lesson is for me. I love learning new things, but I have always been a self-taught person. I taught myself to play guitar, which I love but I do not play well. I taught myself the html language to design webpages, which is obsolete now. I have always taught myself, which is great, but now I wonder how much better I would be at things if I learned from someone else. Watching my son learn something new, I saw him teach himself a new skill, but I also saw him learn something by watching someone else. God places people in our lives every day to teach us how to live in His kingdom but do we listen and learn from them. My personal thought is that I don’t do that well. I go to church and listen to the sermon, but I do not take the time to study and learn with others. There are many wise people around us as we go to church and live from day to day who have so much to teach me, to teach us. Did God put them there for us to learn new things? Am I missing God’s lesson by not learning from them? Woe, what a question.
Prayer: Thank you, God, for placing people in our lives to learn from. Help us see these people as your wise council, and help us know to listen to them. You have placed a lot of wise people around us, help us learn from them how to better live in your Kingdom. Amen.
Prayer Focus: Those learning new things.
