1 Corinthians 11:1-2
Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ. I commend you because you remember me in everything and maintain the traditions even as I have delivered them to you.
Thought for the Day: Following Friends who Follow God
What a precious memory I woke up to on Facebook this morning as a dear friend posted pictures of a special cookbook. The cookbook was put together and sold by the Rainbow Girls that I was a member of in my teens. From the age of twelve through eighteen, I was a member and it became a great part of my life. My daddy shared with me many years after I was in Rainbow Girls, that when I was younger I wanted to participate in a beauty contest during the Benton County Fair. He said he was concerned as he saw me walk across the stage because my shoulders were slumped over and I seemed awkward. But, when I became a Rainbow Girl, wearing formal attire to meetings, my shoulders went back and I became poised as I walked. I was proud several years ago when I was told by a teacher friend that I looked like a model as I walked down the hallway. Rainbow Girls helped me do that. The greatest gift being in that organization gave me was learning about Jesus Christ with a group of friends. We worked together to learn the memory statements and shared time in prayer. We sang hymns and learned how to welcome in new girls. In my later years in the group, I drove from our new home in Fulton, Kentucky, back to Camden every first and third Monday night for the meetings. I then became a State officer, Grand Fidelity, in the State of Tennessee. I was then able to travel the state meeting friends and spending time with girls from across the State of Tennessee. What a blessed time we had and what blessed memories I received for a lifetime. I do not think a lot about my time in Rainbow Girls, but when I do I remember a special time in my life that God gave me. It definitely changed the life of a teen in a very dramatic way.
Today’s devotion in The Upper Room, is about following people and choosing carefully who you follow. Many people in life follow others who “seem” to know what they are doing and it takes them down the wrong road. Other people in life follow the direction led by Christ loving people who work to bring others to Him. I was privileged to be a part of a group that did just that. Because God was the reason for that organization, I was able to learn about him and was able to learn how to become more of a young woman that He wanted me to be.
Prayer: God, thank you for special memories that come into our thoughts. Thoughts and memories of times past when we were led by your loving people to new places in our lives make us who we are. Be with us this day to be a leader to bring someone to You. You are our awesome God. Amen.
