Finding Peace and Rest

Philippians 4:6-7

Have no anxiety about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.  And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, will keep your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Thought for the Day:   Rest comes when we remember the blessings.

Feeling that I would have difficulty going to sleep, I did my normal routine of playing a simple, non-thinking game on my phone.  As my eyes began to close during play, I thought I could turn it off to go to sleep.  It didn’t work and I awoke more awake than before.  Next, I tried to think about what I would write in my devotion the next morning.  I couldn’t think of anything so, again, I was more awake.  Next to my bed lay a stack of some of some of my devotions.    I picked them up and began reading.  I read words from my earliest writings about why I decided to write, stories about my parents and how they took care of my handicapped brothers, thoughts about my early life, prayers about asking for God’s help during times of grief, and finally the blessings I felt as I looked back over every situation.  My heart became peaceful and calm as I read the devotions and prayers, and I was able to close my eyes to go to sleep.  I found rest.

Worries, stress, anxiety, and fears will come into our human thoughts and keep us from the rest God wants us to have.  When rest does not come as God wants for each of us, we can turn to Him to help us find that rest.  When we think about the many blessings He has given in our past and then we pray for peace in the moment, He will give us rest.  Peace and rest come when we remember our many blessings and pray.

Prayer:  God, you have always been with us to bring us peace and rest.  Thank you for bringing the well-needed rest we need.  You have blessed us with so many things along our way in life, and we ask that you remind us of those blessings as we try to find that peace and rest.  Be with us today.  Amen.
