“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up; then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls, who, on finding one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had and bought it.”
Thought for the Day: The Kingdom of Heaven is here and now
Our Worship service yesterday was one filled with “The Kingdom of Heaven”. Our pastor, again, delivered a sermon that took me away from the seat I was sitting in to thoughts of the “Kingdom of Heaven”. In a way that only he can do, he explained the words, “Kingdom of Heaven” better than any explanation I have ever heard. As I took notes, I abbreviated the words “Kingdom of Heaven” to simply “K of H” because of how many descriptions he made during the sermon. “The ‘K of H’ is where you are loved and can be yourself.”, “The ‘K of H’ is walking into a church for the first time and hearing someone say, ‘Can I help you find something?’”, “The ‘K of H’ is when a Word is given in the sermon and you are there.”, “The ‘K of H’ is when we give ourselves to others.”, “The ‘K of H’ is when you find an unexpected treasure.”, and “The ‘K of H’ is when you see clearly that everything is going to be okay.” At each of these points in the sermon, I remembered times when each of these “Kingdom of Heaven” moments happened in my life. After the sermon, we had a time of communion. As my Sunday morning schedule finally allowed me to sing in the choir, I took communion in that group. After communion, I waited to go back into the choir loft because I sat on the end of a row and didn’t want everyone to have to crawl over me. As I stood, most of the choir members walked by me. I was filled with the “Kingdom of Heaven” as many hugged me, told me they were glad I was there, shared they were praying for me about a job, and genuinely showed they cared. A dear friend stood beside me as we waited to go in. She leaned over and said, “You know you are loved here.” And I said, “I know.” The “Kingdom of Heaven” was there for me in that moment.
The Kingdom of Heaven is here with us where we are in every moment. As our pastor wrapped up his sermon, these are the words I wrote down “twice” in my notes. “Sometimes we have to build it. Sometimes it is delivered to us. The Kingdom of God shows up at the right time. The Kingdom of Heaven does not show up out of nowhere, it is always there.”
Prayer: God, we praise You today as we see Your beauty around us in nature and in the faces of those we love. Thank you for all the times you place in front of us those moments when we see the “Kingdom of Heaven”. Help us, Lord, to open our eyes to see all of “Your Kingdom of Heaven” as we go through each day. Amen.
