The Farmers of Joyner’s Campmeeting

James 5:7

Be patient, therefore, brethren until the coming of the Lord. Behold, the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient over it until it receives the early and the late rain.

Thought for the Day: Be patient as we wait for the early and the late rain

Each summer, we attend a campmeeting. Each summer we greet friends and cousins, and we share many stories. One definite question that comes up every year is, “How are the crops?” And, one definite answer is, “We’ll see, waiting for some rain!” As we drive into the campmeeting, we pass many fields and farms. In those fields we see beans, corn, and other crops. On those farms, we see cows and other animals. We notice the land and make comments like, “It looks like they have had no rain”, or “Look, they had rain today!” When we gather for a meal and listen to the blessing, the words “please bring us rain” comes up often. When we enter into the Tabernacle for worship, again the prayer is about the weather. If it is a dry week, the pastor for the week will say or do something to show their concern for the farmers. If rain comes during the week, the pastor will jokingly “take credit” that their presence brought on the rain. They will offer prayers of thanks for the beautiful rain that has nourished the land.
Every year, these farmers plant their crops and wait for God to provide the rain for the crops to grow. They watch the weather and pray that if there is rain in the area that it will come to their farm. They see their animals on the farm and pray that enough rain will come to the land to provide the pastures with food and ponds with water. I don’t know of another profession where people are that dependent on God. The number one thing needed for their livelihood is rain that only God can provide. Each year these farmers show how much faith they have as they plant those seeds. Each year, they rejoice and praise God when He provides their needs. What an amazing example to us!

Prayer: God, thank you for the rain. Thank you for providing what we need when we need it. Lord, be with all those who wait for that rain today and help them see and witness Your mighty hand when the rains come. Amen.
