“Be still, and know that I am God. I am exalted among the nations, I am exalted in the earth.”
Thought for the Day: Turn off the electronics and be still
“Be Still, and Know, that I am God – Be Still, Be Still, and Know”. Each morning as I get dressed and prepare myself to go out, I listen to an album of Amy Grant’s, “Be Still and Know, Hymns and Faith”, which is full of her favorite hymns and some of the hymns lead into new songs. Every one of the hymns she sings on the album brings fond memories to me from growing up in United Methodist Churches in West Tennessee. I sing along with them and I am taken back to the church pew, standing next to my mother, singing. I remember my daddy who was the minister in those churches singing as he led the congregation in those beautiful songs. I can still hear his voice as I close my eyes and listen. Amidst the old hymns on the album are newer songs that reach down into my heart when I hear them knowing that all the questions and desires of my heart have been asked and felt by many. “Be Still and Know” by Amy Grant is one of them.
Be Still and Know
You made me, you know me. You’re able to show me who I am & what you knew before. So I turned off the TV, my cell phone & all screens, The little things that fill my world at home. I know there is more to living life that what I see. You know in the quiet I might find you and believe. You say be still and know that I am God, Be still, be still and know. Be still and know that I am God Be still, be still, be still
I enjoy my quiet time each morning as I reflect on the devotions I read and the scripture. I enjoy the time without noise of any kind as I drink my coffee and think about my day. I enjoy looking out to see God’s creation in the swaying of the tree limbs and the scurrying of the animals in the backyard. In all of the quiet, I pray and I listen for the Still Small Voice of God trying to get through to me. As I spoke to a minister friend yesterday about trying to figure out where God is leading me, he actually mentioned the words “Be Still and Know that I am God”. I knew at that moment that the song I listen to each morning as I am getting ready for my day will have to be a theme song for me. The repeating of that song in my mind throughout the day will be my constant reminder to turn off the distractions and turn on my ears to God.
Prayer: God, thank you for songs that help us in our faith and help us listen to You. Help us find places and times to become quiet and still, and to listen to Your voice. Help us be diligent in putting down the electronics and to sit in a place that is quiet. Then, help us quiet our thoughts in order to just hear Your voice. We want to hear you and follow where You lead. Amen.
Prayer Focus: Calming ourselves to listen to God
