The Polished Stone

Psalm 143:8

Let me hear in the morning of thy steadfast love, for in thee I put my trust. Teach me the way I should go, for to thee I lift up my soul.

Thought for the Day:  Let God make you into a polished stone

When my brothers and I were young, my mother came up with many activities and hobbies for us that would keep us busy.  As my brothers sat in their wheelchairs, they went outside with Wiffle bats and hit the balls my father had attached to the ceiling of the carport.  We helped or at least watched my mother as she created her beautiful decoupage pieces made of wood and varnish.  One of the hobbies we enjoyed the most was the rock tumbler that was given to my brother, Coble.  Each time we began a rock project, we put the rocks in the tumbler along with the small rough minerals that tumbled along with the rocks.  We were always amazed when we washed the rocks and changed to the next mineral how the rocks became smoother with each step.  When they were taken out after the final step, they were smooth and polished.  We made necklaces and bracelets out of them, but Coble just loved to leave them as beautiful, smooth polished-stones without making jewelry out of them.  As I watch water flowing down a creek bed, I realize that the smooth stones I see were once rough, but years of turbulent waters and hardships caused them to become smooth.

Recently, to my amazement, almost every devotional I read has to do with becoming more Christlike as hard times come.  We become more faithful the more we realize that we have to depend on God.  Today I read about Elijah whose streams dried up to less than a trickle, but he remained faithful.  Most of us, as the devotional stated, tend to make our own plans and go our own way.  But Elijah stayed firm in his faith until God sent him to Zerephath.  Where are we today?  Are we ready to go our own way and change our ways without God calling us to do so, or are we ready to stay put and go through the turbulent water where God can create His beautiful, polished stone.  That is a tough question because when we wait, we know we will go through turbulence, but that turbulence will make us more like Him.  So, wait…..wait for God to lead you through.  Become the beautiful, polished stone you are meant to be.

Prayer:  God, there are days when we feel that our lives are only made up of turbulence and we want to go another direction.  We know that you have a plan for us but that the plan sometimes calls for rough times.  Help us wait, help us wait for You to take us through the storms to become the persons You want us to become.  Amen.

Prayer Focus:  Those going through turbulent times
