Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
Thought for the Day: God is with us as we run the race and as we persevere.
“The Upper Room” is my go to Devotional book I go to each morning. Just as I write about whatever is going on in my life, the people who write for the Upper Room do the same thing. They write about life and the events happening with them. Today’s devotion hit home because it is from a writer who has received many rejection letters but who, through God, has persevered and has “run the race”. This one hit right where I am in this moment and is one that can help me keep going when I am not really sure which direction to go. In the Bible, there are many who were called by God to go into places and experiences that were difficult, and were experiences that made no sense as they entered them. But, God knew where He was leading them and they followed. They “ran the race” and they “persevered”, and most witnessed God’s plan as it unfolded before them.
As we go through life, I am realizing more and more, we all encounter times where we feel we are in the unknown. We wonder where God is leading us, and we wonder what is going on around us. We wonder sometimes if God is actually leading us but then we realize He really is. He really is leading us to the plan He has for us. As He leads us to that plan, we are already living His plan. Today, after an evening of more tragic national news, we really question God. Today, we do not have the answers to why bad things happen. Today, however, we have the Bible. Today, we trust God because he has led many through the wilderness. Today, we “run the race” and we “persevere”. We do not give up. We pray like we have never prayed before – we love like we have never loved before – we run the race as we have never done before. God is with us, definitely with us – running the race right beside us.
Prayer: Dear God, we know you are here as so many things are happening with us personally and as so many bad things seem to be taking place in our world. Help us hear Your voice and to know where You are leading us each moment. It seems that many are trying to figure out what to do without looking to You, and it seems out of control. Help everyone involved to feel Your presence and help us all know that as we are in the wilderness, we are with You. Amen.
