“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid. Nor do men light a lamp and put it under a bushel, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”
Thought for the Day: Let the Light of God Shine Through
Sometimes you do not think about important things until you need them. As we worked in the house early in the evening on a Saturday, the lights flickered and then a few minutes later went totally out. We have lived in the community for almost six months, but until now have not had a power outage. After the lights went out, we sent our son to my beside table to get my flashlight. Then, I realized that we might need candles for the evening. I began my search for candles but in the abundance of boxes in the basement and my lack of memory where I put others, we were without except for one I lit in the front of our house. There was actually a panic feeling in my heart that we would be in the dark if the electricity stayed off into the night. We were fortunate that the electricity only stayed off for about thirty minutes and when they came back on they stayed on. I decided at that moment that having candles readily available for next time was a must.
Isn’t that how we feel in our hearts when life gets so difficult and we don’t see an end to our hardships? We long for the light but we don’t see it clearly. Well, when we open the Holy Bible and begin reading, it doesn’t take long to feel the presence of God and to see His light showing us the way to Him. Jesus comes to those who feel they are in the dark through us as His Spirit works in us. We show God’s light when we show love and care to another person. We show God’s light when we help someone in need. We feel God’s light when we are in conversation and visitation with someone who loves God. God’s light is always there and unlike the electricity, we can always depend on the fact that God’s light never goes out and always lights our way.
Prayer: God, thank you for always shining Your light. Help us to keep our eyes opened to see that light when we feel tired or afraid. Be with us and let the Holy Spirit work through us as we see others in need where we will know what to do to help them. Your Light is always there – help us to always see it. Amen.
