Thou dost beset me behind and before, and layest thy hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain it. Whither shall I go from thy Spirit? Or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend to heaven, thou art there! If I make my bed in Sheol, thou art there!
Thought for the Day: God is always right beside us
We sat together on the couch, I with my computer in my lap reading the “Upper Room” devotion and my husband reading his Bible lesson. After a few minutes of silence I heard his whimper, an ever so light whimper. I asked him what was wrong, and he said, “I was thinking about my Mom and Dad.” I immediately said, “I understand, I have been thinking about my Mom and Dad, too.” We talked for a few minutes and I told him that there are times I catch myself almost praying to them. I very quickly said, “I know I am not really praying to them but the memories of them physically being there for me and memories of their conversations makes it easy.” I have images of both of my parents that are so clear that it is easy to see faces and to talk to them. I went on to say that I’m not sure they even hear me. I remember a conversation I had with my mother a few days after my husband was tragically killed in a car accident. My mother said, “I am worried about you because you do not cry.” I said, “Mama, I don’t want to cry because I don’t want David to see me cry.” I remember her answer as if it was yesterday, “Honey, David is in Heaven where there is only happiness and time is not the same as ours. When he sees you, he is not worried about you as he hears you cry because He knows where you are going to be someday….and to him that someday will not have our time.” Our parents are all in Heaven so when we talk to them, whether they hear us or not, we feel we are speaking to them and they are hearing us, and we imagine in our hearts what they are saying back to us.
During that conversation above, I also said in the midst of wondering if my parents hear me that there is a definite. That definite is that God is literally with us all the time. We may not be able to see Him, but if we sit and pray, and then sit and listen, we will feel Him near us and will hear Him as He speaks. We do not have to wonder if He hears us because we know He does. As I listen today I hear my husband’s voice, the creek running outside, the cat purring as he sits beside me, a bird chirping outside, my child’s voice as he says “Good Morning”, the words read from “The Upper Room”, and the Word of God coming from the Bible. Yes, God is beside me right now and always in everything I do. Is it okay to talk to those who have gone before – “Oh, yes” – I would be in big trouble if that wasn’t okay! And, I believe they can hear me and sometimes I can hear their voices. But, where do we turn to when we need a definite – we turn to God because we know He is right there beside us.
Prayer: Thank you, God, for our parents who led us in life with their words of wisdom and love. Their voices are so clear in our minds and we long to hear them once again. You, God, are always with us and in everything we do we can be assured You are right there. That is a comfort that we can feel and know all the time. We love you. Amen.
