Lightning Bugs

Matthew 6:31-33

“Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear’.  For the Gentiles seek all these things; and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all.  But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things shall be yours as well.”

Thought for the Day:  Look to God’s creation

I had a restless night trying to go to sleep and as I do occasionally, I opened the shades in the room and raised the window just a bit.  It always relaxes me and as I hear the creek flowing outside, I ease into sleep.  The night was different though, and that didn’t work.  At one point in my tossing and turning, I noticed something out the window.  At first I had a tiny fear thinking, “Are people out there with flashlights?”, then I realized they were just “lightning bugs”.  I raised the windows even more and laid down facing the windows to see those remarkable creations of God.  As I watched, my eyes began to close and I drifted into sleep.  My worries became suddenly smaller when my thoughts of God’s creation became bigger.

Waking and remembering those simple bugs, lighting the dark area in the woods helps me think more clearly that God is in control and will help me through any worry or concern.  As I pray about my fears today and about my concerns, I remember the scripture from Matthew where Jesus reminds us that God is taking care of our needs.  “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you shall eat or what you shall drink, nor about your body, what you shall put on.  Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?  Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.  Are you not of more value than they?”  My example of this last night was the bugs, insects, that God created to light up the night sky.  Are we not of more value than they?  They lit up the night sky but God, in my watching, lit up a peace in my heart that I am important to Him.

Prayer:   Thank you, God, for your creation and for the remembrance about how much you love us and how valued we are to You.  You created a place for us to live where each day we can see Your creation and know You are with us.  Help us see Your creation as we go through each day and help us remember that You placed everything there for us.
