Aunt Betty

John 14:1-2

I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you, ‘Let not your hearts be troubled, believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms, if it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you.’”

Thought for the Day:  God prepares a place for us

She quietly comes into a room with a genuine and unconditional love for everyone she comes in contact with. Within the last year I heard a friend I work with say, “She was one of my favorite teachers – she always cared and loved us.” My Aunt Betty Henderson is an amazing person and as I thought about people who have inspired me in my life I thought about her. When I was a child, youth, and young adult, I visited her daughter, Kay, who was the same age as me. When I went to her house, there was always room for me. I remember many people coming to the house to visit and she welcomed every one of them. At mealtime, her techniques in the kitchen showed that she knew precisely how much food to prepare for the people in her house, whether they were family or visitor. There was always enough but there was never anything wasted. As she lived in a farmhouse that was a part of our college campus, she celebrated graduations in her house and again, she always shared her hospitality and always had food prepared. She is the mother of four of the most remarkable people I have ever met who have all grown to share her welcoming skills. Aunt Betty is smart, oh is she smart, and her children were obviously nurtured to be just like her. Okay, Uncle Harry was pretty okay too. They are a remarkable pair.

When I grow up, I want to be just like Aunt Betty.” There are many times as I go through my life that I think of Aunt Betty and the things she did. As a teacher, she was loving and caring to her students and I have a feeling she was never flustered. I want to be just like her. As a mother, she was nurturing to her children and raised four amazing children, and her grandchildren are pretty awesome, too. I want to be just like her. As I think today about Aunt Betty, I think about how she was so welcoming and she was always prepared for whoever came her way. I think of the words from John as he says, Jesus said, ‘Let not your hearts be troubled, believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?’” As I was always welcomed into Aunt Betty’s home, I will be welcomed into the house that God has prepared.

Prayer: Thank you God for letting us see a glimpse of your welcoming love through people we have right here with us. There are so many inspiring people and we are so thankful You have placed them in our lives. Be with us that we can learn to be more like those inspiring people where we can learn to be more like You. Amen.
