“In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And when I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. And you know the way where I am going.”
Thought for the Day: God Prepares a Place for Us
What wonderful memories came to me as I read The Upper Room Devotion today. It spoke of going home, that is home to a place we have lived before, and going through the houses we lived at different times in our lives. I began reminiscing about all of those places we lived as a United Methodist pastor’s family and what those places might be like now. Williston, Tennessee, was my home when I was born. We lived in an old wood parsonage that I only remember through pictures. Clopton came next. I always thought my parents left my favorite little stuffed kitty there. Atoka was our first “modern” brick house where I remember seeing a snake as I looked out our window onto our carport and I remember my brother and I both had Chicken Pox while we were there. The Browns Community is where we had our first big yard and where I remember going to grammar school in the first grade. That school located next door to our house closed after my first year. The church had the best playground ever. Then came Camden, ahh, Camden. That was the first time we lived in a town and I was able to walk to friends’ houses because they were nearby and I loved visiting the sweet older couple across the street – the couple who had a lot of clocks. Fulton, KY, represents my three years living out of the state of Tennessee where I graduated high school and learned how to parallel park between a tree and garbage can in our driveway. That was where I drove the route through the town over and over again. Trenton, TN, was the place where we witnessed my brother, Ricky, studying and then graduating from college with honors. Jackson, TN, and Lambuth Memorial UMC will be remembered as the place we lived when I graduated from college, and where my daddy and I set up a plan to get rid of a possum. Memories, sweet memories, of “home” from childhood give us little glimpses of “Home” and where the heart is.
But what about the “Home” we are truly awaiting and searching for. Jesus said to the disciples, “In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And when I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. And you know the way where I am going.” No matter the special and wonderful memories we have to places past and present, none will compare to what is awaiting us when we see “Our Father’s House”, and live there with Him eternally.
Prayer: Father God, thank you for memories of times and places past. You have told us that no matter how special those places are that what you have awaiting us cannot be compared to anything we know. Thank you for preparing Your house for us. Amen.
