As the Deer

Psalms 42:1-2

As a hart longs for flowing streams, so longs my soul for thee, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and behold the face of God?

Thought for the Day:  As the deer panteth for the water so my sound longeth after Thee.

“As the deer panteth for the water, so my soul longeth after thee. You alone are my heart’s desire and I long to worship you.” In the quiet of the afternoon as I awaited my husband coming home for a cookout, I made my way down the backstairs from the patio to the creekside. I set up my chair, listened to the creek, and opened my computer to write. As I thought about the creek and thought about the water, I had a memory about the song, “As the Deer”. Twenty-five years ago, my husband and I were a part of a singing group at our church named One Voice. We sang in our church and then went out to churches in other places to share the music. “As the Deer” was one of the first pieces we sang and I always loved the lyrics. Today, those words mean something very special to me as we now live in a place with a beautiful creek that makes beautiful music. After I wrote about “As the Deer” above, I placed a video on Facebook of our backyard in its serenity and received a message from a friend asking me if she saw a deer in the video. I replied that there was not a deer but that there was peace. This morning follows an evening when my family received the blessing of a cookout on the back deck, and an evening when we received a wonderful blessing – peace and serenity.

Imagine a place where we only feel peace in a moment. Imagine a place where we only feel God’s presence instead of the presence of worry and pain. Imagine a place where the sounds we hear are the sounds of God’s peace and not the sounds of earthly turmoil. We do not have to go far to hear the sounds of God’s peace and know we are loved by God. We just have to go to a quiet place and pray quietly – it is there that all the earthly things fade away and God’s peace comes into our heart.

Prayer: God, thank you for bringing us peace in the midst of earthly struggles and pain. Please give us the thoughts throughout the day that we need to talk to you and to let you in to bring us that peace. Amen.
