“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no man than to lay down his life for his friends.”
Thought for the Day: A lifetime’s not too long to live as friends
We traveled to our old home for the first time since our move over 3 months before and had exciting anticipation as we traveled. We had plans to meet my son’s dearest friends and their parents in a restaurant on our arrival into the town. Once in awhile along the way my son would talk about his friends and the ideas they share and the personalities they have. As we traveled, we listened to Pandora radio on a Christian station. At one point, it was as if every song had a special message for us. One was a song that said to be brave and not give up on dreams. Another song was one that is very special to me about the blessings that can come through heartache – one of my favorite “solo” songs. Then it happened, the song “Friends” by Michael W. Smith came on. I teared up and my son looked at me. I said, “Honey, we are going to meet your friends that you haven’t seen all together in over 3 months – listen to this song. It says, ‘Friends are Friends forever if the Lord’s the Lord of them, and a friend will not say never ‘cause the welcome will not end. Though it’s hard to let you go in the Father’s hands we know, that a lifetime’s not too long to live as friends.’” I went on to say, “Do you know who one of my best friends is? Nancy, my college roommate. We’ve only seen each other a few times in the last 10 years, but every time we talk it is as if we were just together. We will always be close friends.” Two hours later, we sat in a restaurant with the four boys sitting together. As I watched, the boys acted exactly as they did the last time they were together, giggling and doing silly things to get each others attention. My heart was warmed in watching them, knowing that those friendships would probably last a lifetime.
Today, as I reflect over that meeting of these four boys, I already think about the many friends my son has met in our new home and the excitement I hear in his voice when he talks about them. He has already discovered that new friendships can be special when God ordains them. His new friends have been made through church, especially those in his confirmation class, and the special bond has already begun. I think he has discovered, too, that his old friends will never go away and that the bond they have will always be strong. His “circle of friends” has become bigger and will continue growing throughout his life.
Prayer: God, thank you for friends. Thank you for bringing friends into our lives as we go through different times and different places. Thank you as we make those friends that they become brothers and sisters in life and they become forever friends. Amen
