Accepting Blessings

Psalms 84:10-12

For a day in thy courts is better than a thousand elsewhere.  I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of wickedness, for the Lord God is a sun and shield; he bestows favor and honor.  No good thing does the Lord withhold from those who walk uprightly.  O Lord of hosts, blessed is the man who trusts in thee!

Thought for the Day:  Open our hearts to receive God’s blessings.

It is an almost every day occurrence in our house for our five year old to become upset because we have said no or other reasons.  During that time, there is no consoling and there is definitely no conversation.  The door is closed and I have learned to stop talking and give it time.  I have learned that if I do try to talk to him during that time about things we are planning on doing together later or even a reward, it is mute.  It will not be a conversation that will be listened to and definitely will not be positive.  Most of the time, the quiet from my making the decision not to talk in that moment brings a nap to him, which is the most needed thing.  When he awakes, our conversation is more positive and he is more accepting of what I am saying to him.
A devotional I read this morning reminded me that many times we are not accepting of the blessings God tries to give us.  If we have a bad attitude or if we are not listening closely to God, we might not accept the gifts as blessings from God.   We might watch them go by without even knowing they were there to begin with.  But, if we have the attitude of love and are in conversation with God, we see the blessings clearly and are more accepting of them.  I wonder how many blessings I have missed because I could not be consoled and would not allow myself in a moment to be in conversation with God.  I loved this quote from The Upper Room Devotional today:  “The flow of God’s blessings in my life is rather like the flow of water through a pipe. My attitude and actions affect whether I experience God’s blessings flowing freely or as a trickle.”  Today, I pray I keep the pipe open for God’s blessings.
Prayer:   God, thank you for the love you give us each day and the blessings you pour down on us.  Please give us the attitude in our hearts to recognize them as blessings and to accept them fully.  Help us to fix our eyes on You.  You are awesome, God, and we love you.  Amen.
