Peter

Matthew 14:28-30

And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, bid me come to you on the water.” He said, “Come,” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus; but when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord save me.”

Thought for the Day:  Have faith to follow Jesus.

I read a devotional in The Upper Room this morning about Peter walking toward Jesus on the water. But when Peter felt the wind he became fearful and began to sink, calling for Jesus to save him.  Peter, in sermons and other talks, seemed to be the one who wanted to have all the faith in the world but his human thoughts and feelings made him do and say things that showed his lack of faith.  This is a perfect example for me because I have been fearful many times through my life, especially lately, when I have wanted to have faith to do something I needed to do but became fearful because of my own insecurities.  Today, it seems I am faced in many situations when my faith is put to the test, as all of us are.  As I enter those times, I wonder how I am going to keep my eyes on Jesus as he guides me through each step.

When I think of Peter and the life he lived with Jesus, I think I am encouraged because Jesus called him Cephas (Peter), meaning Rock.  Then Jesus said, “Upon this rock, I will build my kingdom.” Why am I encouraged by this?  Because Jesus took someone as human as me, who wanted to have a strong faith but sometimes faltered, to be his right hand man and his rock.  To me, today in this moment, this means that I do not have to be perfect and I do not have to do everything right.  What I have to do is try to the best of my ability and strength to listen and to follow Jesus Christ.  I will make mistakes, as Peter did, but God already knows that.  God loves me, knows me, and will always there in front of me leading the way.

Prayer:  God, thank you for Peter.  Thank you for letting us know that we do not have to be perfect in your kingdom and that even Peter, your friend, made mistakes as we do.  Help us have the faith we need to follow you and help us to keep our eyes focused on you.  Amen.
