Proverbs 8:32-35

And now, my sons, listen to me; happy are those who keep my ways. Hear instruction and be wise, and do not neglect it.  Happy is the man who listens to me, watching daily at my gates, waiting beside my doors.  For he who finds me finds life and obtains favor from the Lord.

Thought for the Day:  Be patient and wait, hear God’s voice.

I read the story “The Owl Moon” to my students. It is a beautiful story and was perfect for calming them down after their recess time and preparing them for a calm dismissal time at the end of the day.  The story is about a little boy and his father taking a walk into a snowy wooded area to go owling.  As they quietly walked, the father occasionally would do an owl call and then they would sit quietly and listen.  Each time, they would not hear an owl call back so they continued on their way.  After a very long time, it happened.  The father did his owl call and they once again waited quietly.  This time, however, an owl called back and flew over their heads to land on a limb above where they stood.  In total silence, they looked at the magnificent owl taking in its beauty. After the owl flew away, the father and son walked quietly home remembering in their thoughts the moment they heard the owl’s call and then remembering the silent time they spent alone with the beautiful animal.

As I read the story to the children, I couldn’t help but think about my search every day to hear God’s voice leading me in the direction I should go.  Most days are difficult because I bound into my day with my agenda of things that need to be done and my quiet time fades into the sounds of the day. I seem to fail miserably when I try to listen, because my thoughts seem to immediately go somewhere else.  As I think about the story and try to imagine the amazement the father and son experienced when they saw the owl, I feel my heart long to become quiet and calm where I can hear God’s amazing and magnificent voice speaking to me.  Lord God, help me become quiet and calm where I can hear Your voice today.

Prayer: Our sovereign God, thank You for reminding us today that in order to hear Your voice, we have to slow down and listen. Help us hear Your voice in the magnificence of the day and help us calm our hearts where we can wait patiently to hear You.  Amen.
