1 Corinthians 12:4-8
Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of working, but it is the same God who inspires them all in every one. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.
Thought for the Day: What gifts do we admire?
Admiration! As I glance through the news and entertainment sections of magazines and Facebook posts, I catch myself admiring beautiful women, famous royal family members, intelligent speakers, and the list goes on and on. Today, our church’s daily devotion is based on 1 Corinthians 12:1-11. As I read, it stated so truthfully that sometimes we look at the “gifts” of a person as things that bring them admiration or respect. It might be beauty or talent, and it may be in the beautiful way someone speaks. Then it went on to say that the true measure of our gifts is how they are used. Last night, my child was very tired as I sat at a table at church after a meal and he fell asleep in my lap. As I sat for a longer period than normal, I watched the church friends as they cleaned up after the meal. There was such joy on their faces and obviously in their hearts. Each week they come and prepare a meal for the church family, and then they clean up afterwards. As I watched, my admiration for these new friends grew and I could see clearly the gifts God had given each of them in the way they did their ministry with obvious love on their faces and in their hearts.
We can admire people of fame and fortune all day long, but the true gifts are those gifts of the Spirit. “Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of working, but it is the same God who inspires them all in every one. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.”
Prayer: God, thank you for the inspiration we receive by watching friends share Your true “Gifts”. Help us find our inspiration through those sharing Your Spirit and not those of fame. Help us learn from those who share your Spiritual Gifts where we can share better the Gifts you give us. Amen
