1 Corinthians 12:12-13
For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For by one Spirit we are all baptized into one body – Jews or Greeks, slaves or free – and all were made to drink of one Spirit.
Thought for the Day: We are the Body of Christ
As I sat during chancel choir rehearsal last night, I thought several times that I needed to take individual pictures of the choir members where I could learn their names. We rehearsed pieces about the Body of Christ as we sang through the songs for the coming weeks. Then, we got to the end of our time together by sharing joys and concerns. I listened as different ones stated names of those needing prayers and spoke the reasons. Some were people recuperating at home from recent surgeries and some were in hospitals or rehab units. Throughout the time, I heard different ones ask the others if they knew where these friends were and if they had addresses. One particular member stated the exact address, including room number, of one of the friends and others thanked him. As choir rehearsal finished and as I reflected back, I realized that the time of bringing our voices together in song and then the time of joys and concerns showed the Body of Christ in a special way. That time brought together people with all different gifts to be a very solid and special body, the Body of Christ.
Isn’t that the description of using our spiritual gifts to become a part of the Body of Christ? I am always amazed when I sit in groups of people how the different personalities and gifts come out, and when we let everyone come together bringing their talents and gifts, then we see Christ’s Body in all its glory. “We are the Body of Christ”.
Prayer: We are all a part of Your Body, God, and we ask you today to help us use the gifts you have given to blend with the gifts of others to bring your beautiful body into view. That body formed through people of different backgrounds and talents, become a strong and vital part of You. Amen.
