Honest Prayer

Philippians 4:6-7

Have no anxiety about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, will keep your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Thought for the Day:  God wants us to pray honestly.

I became overwhelmed yesterday with trying to make sense of all the challenges one has when they move to a new place. When a move involves changes in just about everything, it is difficult to organized the mind and organize everything else to establish a routine.  Today I awoke early worried about setting up emails and communication with my students’ parents, thinking about setting up our new budget, formulating a schedule for the activities of the different members of my family including a meal schedule, and even stressing over trying to find a time for myself.  As anxiety came, I started thinking about my writing for the day and was overwhelmed when words didn’t come.  Finally, I remembered words spoken by one of my pastors in a Sunday School class yesterday.  He talked about prayer. He reminded us that in Matthew, Jesus said “My Father, if it is be possible, let this cup pass from me”.  The pastor reflected that in saying this Jesus was telling God that he was afraid.  He went on to say that it is okay to be honest with God.  Jesus was honest in telling God he was afraid and it is okay for us as well.  It is okay and God is big enough to handle it.

Sometimes as I go through my day, I get so involved in whatever situation arises that I forget to pray and when I do, I’m not sure I am totally honest with God.  Today, as I look back at my life and the times I have been at rock bottom and have prayed honestly, I can see where God grabbed my hand and pulled me up. Today, I’m praying honestly for God to help me through this time of organization and to help me go through these anxieties in a way He would lead and in a way that shows God’s grace to others. It’s okay to be honest, God is big enough.

Prayer: God thank you for listening to our prayers, no matter how honest they are. God, You are an awesome God who loves us and takes care of us.  You are also a Father who wants us to bring our fears and concerns honestly to You.  Please God, help us through whatever anxieties we are going through today.  Amen.
