Showing Jesus to Others

James 5:16

Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of the righteous man has great power in its effects.

Thought for the Day:  What can we do to show Jesus to others today?

There is a special woman of God who I love to “watch in action”. She has always been very special to me but more recently has become a true influence on my life. “What prayer request do you have today?” are the words she says as she meets someone new, no matter where she is. We shared some time recently in a restaurant. At one point, the server came to our table to bring us drinks. After she left Nancy said, “I am praying for her.” We continued eating and sharing time for a few minutes and then we realized it was time to leave. As I came up in line to pay, she was already paying. I noticed her writing something down on her receipt. Then, I listened as the cashier said, “My husband’s name is ‘Tommy’ and he really needs prayers.” As the time continued, I heard a second cashier say, “My friend could use some prayers too.” Nancy asked her what her friend’s name was and she wrote that down as well. As much as I love to write and to share prayer requests in my writing, I stand in awe when I watch her. There is a glow about her when she asks people for prayer requests and I truly believe that each of those people feel they are experiencing a time with Jesus when they talk to her. I also know that my friend, Nancy, does not see this in herself and that makes her even more special.

As I think of Nancy, I think of the calling of Jesus that we go and make disciples of all nations. Her ability to bring people to share their prayer requests begins a time in their thoughts about God. When she walks away, I imagine that their thoughts are, “I just saw Jesus” or “What a Godly woman – she is praying for me.” That is what God calls all of us to do – to be like Jesus. What can I do today to be more like Jesus? I need to be more like Nancy – she is a wonderful example.

Prayer:   God, thank you for the influences You put in our lives to give us examples of how to live. They give us what we need as we learn to show Jesus to those around us. Amen.
