Love and Compassion

Psalms 9:9-10

The Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. And those who know thy name put their trust in thee, for thou, O Lord, hast not forsaken those who see thee.

Thought for the Day:  How can we show love and compassion to someone today?

My parents had three beautiful children, two boys and a girl. When the oldest boy was six years old, he and the other son were diagnosed with Duchene Muscular Dystrophy. I can see, as a parent now, that it would be very easy to ask God, “Why did you do this to these precious children?” My parents never asked that question. They believed that God allowed for this to happen, but not that He caused it. As I watched my parents, especially my mother, take care of every need the boys had, I realized that God gave my mother the compassion and love needed to be a life time caregiver to them. Even after their deaths, she continued showing her compassion to others through her consignment shop and through teaching handicapped adults to read. Through daily prayers, my mother found the strength to continue being a caregiver to so many.

God does not make things happen to people but He does allow things to happen. I cannot imagine ever believing that God caused by brothers to be born with Muscular Dystrophy but I do believe that God gave my mother the abilities and love to take care of them. God gives us gifts everyday that help us do whatever He leads us to do. Help us see his hand leading us to the people needing our love and compassion today.

Prayer:   God, it is so hard to understand how you allow such suffering, especially to children. Thank you for giving us examples of your love and compassion through prayerful people as they show compassion and love to those in need. Amen.
