The Roller Coaster

 Isaiah 11:2-3

And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. And his delight shall be in the fear of the Lord.

Thought for the Day:  His delight shall be in the fear of the Lord.

“Nathaniel, what was your favorite part of going to Walt Disney World?” was asked by several after our trip a couple of years ago. He replied, “The roller coasters!” Expedition Everest was the one that Nathaniel wanted to ride over and over again. When we would ask him why, it was because of the things that were scary in the ride. Recently, as we have been driving occasionally through Atlanta to get to the place where my sweet husband is living, we have passed by Six Flags Over Georgia, where the first thing seen from the interstate is one of the roller coasters.  As we drive by, I can tell that Nathaniel looks at it in fear but I also know that deep down inside he wants to ride that roller coaster someday. In my reading this morning, I read about the people in Isaiah and how they feared God. They feared Him because of His majesty and strength. However, they also loved and adored Him because of his love for them.

Can we delight in the fear we have of God? The Bible says yes and as I look at my life, I believe I do that. I do fear God. I have been taught all my life that I am to lead a Christian life and to follow God. But in doing that there are times when I am led to places that bring me fear. There are situations that arise that are uncomfortable for me in the moment. In most of those cases, however, I feel rejuvenated and uplifted in the knowledge that I have done as God has called. I see the fear in my child’s face as he looks toward that rollercoaster that sits in that park next to Interstate 20 that runs through Georgia knowing that someday he is going to take on the challenge to ride it. And I know that he is going to get off that roller coaster saying, “I want to do that again!”

Prayer:   God, help me realize that you are with me as I go through this life and that at times You are going to bring me to places that are uncomfortable for me. Help me meet that challenges knowing that You will be with me every step of the way. Amen.
