The Spirit’s Prayer

Romans 8:26-27

Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with sighs too deep for words. And he who searches the hearts of men knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.” (RSV)

Thought for the Day:  The Spirit helps us pray

During the time after my husband passed away in a car accident, I spent much time with my mother who stayed with me. One day I shared with her that I didn’t have the words to pray. I was very concerned that every time I tried to pray, I could not think of what I needed to pray for. She shared in a beautiful way that it was okay. She said, “Honey, when you can’t pray the Spirit intercedes and prays for you.” I had heard that before and I had read the scriptures, but it didn’t make sense until then. I was able to let go of the concern and give the praying over to the Holy Spirit who knew my every need better than I did and was able to pray in a way I could not even imagine. After time, I was able to pray again but I knew at that moment that the Holy Spirit and my mother were praying the prayers that I could not pray myself.

Sometimes life can get overwhelming and grief can be hard, but with the Holy Spirit interceding for us we can feel God’s presence in our lives.

Prayer:   Father, thank you for sending your Holy Spirit to walk beside us and to help us along the way. Sometimes life gets hard and we do not know where to turn, but we know the Spirit will guide us if we just turn our cares over to you.

Prayer Focus: When we cannot seem to pray
