A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; even as I have loved you, that you also love one another.
Thought for the Day: Being God’s hands to others
I love traveling overseas. I especially enjoy meeting people who speak different languages. I experienced this in an unexpected way on one of our flights when we were landing in the Amsterdam airport. As we were approaching the landing, the plane became unstable with turbulence. My husband and I looked at each other for assurance and then I felt a hand grab mine. It was the young lady sitting next to me. I looked over at her and she looked scared to death. I held her hand throughout the rest of the rough flight until we landed safely. That young lady and I made a connection on that flight even though we did not speak the same language. I think she felt that she could trust me in a way a child trusts a mother. She followed us off the airplane and we separated when we got to our land transportation. Later that evening, we were in the lobby of our hotel and we felt someone come up beside us. It was the same young lady from the plane. This time, we were able to smile and relax with each other for just a few minutes.
That experience of sharing a fearful moment with that young lady has stayed in my memory for over fifteen years. It reminds me that God places people in our lives who can be his hands to others. I was able to be God’s hand to this scared young lady just as others have been God’s hands for me throughout frightening times in my life.
Prayer: God, thank you for giving us opportunities to be your hands. Help us each day to find people to help. Thank you also for bringing others into our lives who can be your hands to us. Amen.
