Comforting Others

2 Corinthians1:3-4

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

Thought for the Day:  Showing compassion and love for those grieving

I grew up with a friend who attended church with me as well as school. We shared time together and enjoyed each other’s company. Several years after we moved away from my hometown, and after one of my brothers passed away from complications due to Muscular Dystrophy, her brother died unexpectedly. I drove back the night of the visitation to see her and to offer my condolences. When she saw me, she immediately came over to me and said, “You know how I feel more than anyone else here”, then we sat and talked a few minutes. I believe that was the first time that I truly realized that my life, as well as the life of my parents, was going to be a life of caring about people through loss and pain. In caring for me through the lives and deaths of my brothers, God gave me the love and compassion for others.

Through the years since that time, I have prayed and loved people through situations they have gone through. I am not a very outgoing person so visiting does not come easily, but I have learned that I can love and pray for those who are grieving. God gave me my quiet personality and He placed situations in my life where death and pain were near. Most of all God showed His love for me in my grief so I could show His love to others.

Prayer:   Father, help us see opportunities to pray for those around us. Make our eyes the eyes that can see pain and grief, and help us know how to pray for those needing Your love today. Amen.
