Role Models

1 Corinthians 13:13

So faith, hope, love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

Thought for the Day:  There are role models who teach us to love as Christ asked us to love

I have a special lady in my life who is a second mother to me and I feel very blessed each day to have her love. Rita Shaw was the mother of my first husband, David, and during the time we were married, she and I did many things together such as cooking, talking, sewing, and many other things. Throughout the months after David’s death, I watched this wonderful Christian lady take a very positive attitude toward life expanding her love for her own children to many others. God led her at that time in her life to volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House and to teach Third Grade Sunday School at her church. On special days, she would drive into Memphis where she could make cookies and share time with those special children who were living at Ronald McDonald House. Some were children who were going to hospitals daily for cancer treatments, while others were the siblings of those children who needed some tender loving care and she was the perfect person to offer that to them. I can only imagine attending the Third Grade Sunday School Class where she taught because I know without a doubt that she was a teacher who would be remembered by those children when they were grown. Most recently, I have witnessed her as a parent to my husband, Mark, and a wonderful grandmother to my boys. Lolli, as she is known to my boys, is a remarkable gift to them and a perfect role model for me.

When I think of Rita and the lives she has touched, I think of the song, “Thank You”, and I know that there are many children and young adults who think of her and say, “Thank You for giving to the Lord, I was a life that was changed.”

Prayer:   God, thank you for the role models you have placed in our lives to help us in our life journey. Their wisdom and love offer us knowledge and acceptance, and we are thankful for them. You are amazing, God, and these role models are amazing to us. Amen.

  1. You are too generous with your comments. It is you and your family that have been a blessing to me. I thank God everyday for you. Thanks for letting Pop and I be such a special part of your family. Believe me I have learned more than those with whom I have dealt. I thank God for each of the opportunities He has allowed me to be involved. As you have learned, life is beautiful when we allow God to lead and guide our lives even during hard times. Even then He lifts us up and sometimes carries us through those valleys. Thank you Lord!! You are an awesome God!!

    With love
