Prayerful Friends

Philippians 2:3-4

Do nothing from selfishness or conceit, but in humility count others better than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests but also to the interests of others. (RSV)

Thought for the Day:  How can we pray for others today?

“Do you have a joy or concern I can put on my prayer list for you today?” were the words that were spoken. After many years, my college roommate and I met for dinner and those were the words I heard her ask our server. I realized at that moment that the evening with her was going to be very special. We talked about family, work, church, heartaches, and blessings. Through the entire evening, one or the other of us would talk about God and how we had seen Him working in our lives. It was an amazing evening where my sweet “Nancy” taught me more about how I should love God and how I should love those around me more fully.

God wants us to love those around us, even those we meet during our daily walk. Nancy lives “God” in the way that Jesus taught us so long ago. With her SmartPhone, she types in the prayer requests of others, even strangers, where she can pull up her list everyday to intentionally pray for their needs. When she told me she would be praying for me, I felt so deeply that my needs were going to be covered in prayer. Her last words to me that evening were, “Talk to God as you drive home.” Nancy has challenged me through her way of life, to pray through every moment in my life and to pray more intentionally for others.

Prayer:   God, thank you for friends who teach us to be more like you. Help us to be more intentional in asking the needs of others and then praying specifically for them. Amen.

      1. Thank you, Lloyd! I had a great feel good moment when I read your comment – I shared it with Mark immediately after I read it. It means the world to me that you are reading the devotionals I share!

    1. Loved this! I have 4 friends that meet together every week to pray for our families and businesses. We have been AMAZED at all the blessings we are seeing. Great things happen when men and women of God stop to pray for one another.

  1. True friends are a gift from God! They are folks you can trust to talk with you, and not about you. They know when to support you and when to challenge you. They stand beside you so you can journey together, not behind you so they can stab you with a knife in the back. I am thankful to God for the gift of friendship, and I am thankful for the many true friends that our Lord has allowed me to have through the years! As the scripture says, “there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother”.
