A Mama’s Love

Proverbs 31:27-29

She looks well to the ways of her household, and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: “Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all.”

Thought for the Day:  A mother’s love endures in the hearts of her children

I always admired my mother who showed her love in extraordinary ways to her children. Very early in our lives, my mother was handed very difficult news about my brothers as they were diagnosed with Duchene Muscular Dystrophy. At that point in the 1960s, the prognosis was not good and one doctor even told my parents that the boys would probably have to grow up in an institution. My mother would have nothing to do with that stating that she would take care of the boys.

She and my father took care, with the help from God, of every need the boys and I had making sure we had everything we needed and were able to participate in every desired activity. We went through our lives traveling to every state in the continental United States, graduating from high school, and we all attended college with my eldest brother graduating with honors. As my brothers aged and weakened, our mother wrote their school notes for them and fed them when they could not feed themselves.   My mother made sure, also, to help me feel loved and special as I grew up with handicapped brothers. She was a blessing to so many and touched a multitude of people who watched her use her faith and her dependence on God to help her through many difficult times.

She taught so many, especially me, how to lean on God through difficult times and to know that He would bring us through.

Prayer:   God, thank you for the role models you have placed in our lives. Help us become more like them because we know in doing that, we will become more like you. Be with those who are care givers for special needs children and for those taking care of loved ones. Amen.

  1. Donna, I had the privilege of knowing Mary Jane Coble at UT Martin. Never did
I realize I would also count you and Mark as special friends! JoAnn James

    1. JoAnn, thank you for reminding me about your memory of Mama. Mark and I love you very much and are thankful for the time we had with you and Mr. Harold in Dyersburg. We speak often of Dyersburg with much love for the church and the friends we had who have passed on and for these who are still there. We miss you all.

  2. Donna, Mama and I talked different times about how terrible and heartbreaking it must have been for your mother to have had to go through what she did. I know she was a very good mother and I always admired her. Your daddy and she did everything they could to make all of your lives as normal as possible. Your entire family always seemed to be so happy.

    1. Thanks Thomina! We were happy and were able to feel joy even in the tough times. I will be sharing a devotional soon about that joy and how both Mark’s parents and my parents taught us to find joy in everything! Love you!
